Firestorm Caen: Turn 1

Today I will post the games and scenarios for Turn 1 of the Firestorm Caen campaign; Firestorm and the City. This turn focuses on the airborne and beach landings of D-day and the days immediately following D-day. In this turn we will fight the battles of Gold beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach, and the Airborne landings. In this post I will post the scenarios for each game and the firestorm troops.

Campaign map for turn 1
You can find more information about the campaign here.

You can find more information about registration here.

For this turn we will be fighting the battles between the German and Allied Forces at Gold beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach, and the airborne landings around Breville. For each area I will provide a mission, firestorm troops, and recommended forces (ex. German attacker, Allied attacker). Pick the mission and sector that best aligns with the forces at your disposal.

All Firestorm troop descriptions and stats can be found on pages 20-25 of the Firestorm: Caen pdf. Firestorm troops can also be replaced by the points values of troops listed on the pdf. German forces are at a disadvantage on turn 1 with less Firestorm troops than the Allied forces.

Turn: 1a
Completion Date: Monday, Nov. 9

Gold Beach
Allied Forces are assaulting Gold Beach and German strongpoints surrounding the beach. As the Allied player, your job is to break through and control key objectives before the German reinforcements gain control. As the German player, you are tasked with holding onto important objectives around the beach and preventing the Allies from gaining a foothold in Normandy. This mission is ideal for a British infantry company attacking a German infantry or fortified company.

Mission: No Retreat or "Hit the Beach" mission from Overlord
Attacker: Allies
Allied Firestorm Troops: 50 Northumbrian Division-Confident Veteran Rifle platoon with Command Rifle/MG, 6 Rifle/MG teams, 1 Piat team, 1 light mortar (all have sticky bombs) (or 100 points)
AND
8 Armoured Brigade-Confident Trained, 2 Shermans and 1 Firefly VC (200 points)
German Firestorm Troops: 2 Confident Trained StuG IV or StuG G assault guns (or 100 points)

Juno Beach
Allied forces are making progress on Juno Beach. As the Allied commander, your job is to break through against strong resistance to reinforce the established beachhead and provide room to land more troops and supplies on Juno Beach. For the German commander, your job is to retreat with your forces intact while maintaining control of key strategic locations. This mission is ideal for an Allied tank, infantry or mechanized force attacking a German infantry or mechanized force.

Mission: Fighting Withdrawal or "Hit the Beach" mission from Overlord
Attacker: Allied
Allied Firestorm Troops: 3rd Canadian Division-Confident Trained Rifle platoon with Command Rifle/MG, 6 Rifle/MG teams, 1 Piat team, 1 light mortar (all have sticky bombs, Special rules-Canadian) (or 100 points)
AND
2 Canadian Armoured Brigade-Confident Trained, 2 Shermans and 1 Firefly VC (Special rules: Canadian) (200 points)
German Firestorm Troops: Confident Trained Grenadier Platoon with 1 command Panzerfaust, 4 Rifle/MG teams, 1 Pak40 (100 points)

Sword Beach
After facing light resistance, Allied forces have broken through the beachhead and into the open ground around Sword Beach. German reinforcements are reacting swiftly to counterattack against the building Allied beachhead. For the Allied commander, your mission is to repulse the German reinforcements to protect the fragile lines of supply on the beaches. As German commander, your mission is to defeat the Allied forces expanding out from the beach and to threaten the vulnerable areas of the Allied lines of supply. This mission is best suited for any forces.

Mission: Encounter or "Battle for Sword Beach" scenario (Overlord)
Attacker: None (fairfight)
Allied Firestorm Troops: 27 Armoured Brigade-Confident Trained, 2 Shermans and 1 Firefly VC (200 points)
OR
3rd Infantry Division-Confident Trained Rifle platoon with Command Rifle/MG, 6 Rifle/MG teams, 1 Piat team, 1 light mortar (all have sticky bombs) (or 100 points)
German Firestorm Troops: Confident Trained Grenadier Platoon with 1 command Panzerfaust, 4 Rifle/MG teams, 1 Pak40 (100 points)

Allied Drop Zone (Breville B-5)
In the hours leading up to D-Day, Allied Airborne troops have been dropped in Normandy to control key areas behind the main German defences. This mission is vitally important to disrupt German communications and reinforcements. German forces have surrounded a pocket of Allied forces controlling a key location. The Allied airborne troops must hold on until reinforced. This mission is ideally suited to a British paratrooper or glider force attacked by any German force.

Mission: Cauldron or "Seize and Hold" (Overlord)
Attacker: German
Allied Firestorm Troops: 6 Airborne Division-Fearless Veteran Rifle platoon with Command Rifle/MG, 6 rifle/MG teams, Piat team (carry Gammon bombs) (200 points)
German Firestorm Troops: 2 snipers (100 points)

  1. I haven't played a game in months - this will be good to kickstart my interest in FoW again. So excited that this has started!

    1. O and, what is the points limit for each side aside from Firestorm units?

    2. That is, unless it's up to us to play to a points level that matches best to our army collections...?

    3. I would recommend 1500 points for the starting value, but you can use whatever best matches your collection and preferences. Firestorm troops will have a bigger impact at lower points values.

    4. 1500 plus Firestorm troops even in "Hit the Beach" missions? In the rules it mentions attacker gets 25% more points, is it in effect or does the larger number of Allied Firestorm troops balance this out?

    5. The mission points reference is for a stand alone mission. The firestorm troops help to balance this out. So, points vale + firestorm troops for each side.

    2. I'd love to figure out a way to get you involved. I know you are far from opponents a lot of the time. Any chances for bolt action games?

You could write some fluff for the intros to some.missions if you wanted.

  7. Thanks, mate.

There is a tiny chance of a Bolt Action game, which would be my 11AD verses some Germans, so I promise I'll let you know if that becomes a definite, even if (obviously) it can't 'count' towards the campaign.

    You're a real gent.

    1. We could definitely count a bolt action game. We'd just have to figure out a way to translate the game scores.

      Anything I should know?

  8. First 2 games in at our club day today.

Both Paras (one American one Brit) vs Germans.

American Paras played Seize and Hold, dont know the exact details but they lost 3-4. Just did not have the means to deal with a ton of dug in German infantry.

My Brit AARR came up against a King Tiger, 3 Tigers, some PzrGrens, Nebs and 88s in Couldron. Me infantry and 6 Pounders started off on the table and my Tetrarchs and Cromwells were in reserve, I got lucky and took the KT out on the 2nd turn and managed to hold on long enough for the Tetrarchs to arrive and mop up the 88s and Nebs, German company moral check failed at the bottom of turn 6 giving a 6-1 win to Allies.

    2. Both Para games so both Breville :)

  9. Heh, as the 82nd Airborne commander maybe that's why we lost- not even sure where we were (still don't). Attacking a well-rolling lehr pz gr company sucked balls

  10. Played Hit the Beach at Gold Beach. Substituted the 29th ID for Brits, but they failed to get both objectives due the timely arrival of German Firestorm reinforcements. Attack stalled out at the near objective. 4-3 to the Germans.
